How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV Parked

There are quite a few options when it comes to charging your new electric vehicle in Minneapolis, each with different plugs and ports, but you might be asking, “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” Electric car charging times differ based on what type of plug you use, and the question of “How long does it take to charge a Chevy Bolt EV?” is influenced by the unique Chevy architecture for electric car charging. Read on, and let the Rosedale Chevrolet team break it all down for you.

What Are My Electric Car Charging Options?

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): This is a normal grounded three-prong plug that you plug into the wall like normal. It’s not very fast, but it’s a good option if you want to top off a little charge after you’re done commuting from work. How long does Level 1 charging take? More than 24 hours for a full charge, so it’s pretty slow.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 charging typically uses rapid 240V charging for your brand of car in particular. Chevy has their own in-house home charging solution that’s best to answer the question of “How long does it take to charge a Chevy Bolt?” You can often get from 20% to 80% in half an hour or 40 minutes, but getting all the way to 100% will take longer because there’s a diminishing rate of charging speed.
  3. Public Charging: You also have the option of charging in St. Paul or Blaine at the mall, the hotel, or wherever electric car charging stations are. There’s Level 2, equivalent to plugging in at a wallbox at home, but there’s also Level 3, which can get you to fully charged in record time.
